Las Piñatas Call for Entries!

This year, Las Piñatas returns as part of the grand reopening of the Emma S. Barrientos Mexican American Cultural Center (MACC) during their Día de los Muertos Celebration. More details here: MACC Event.

Las Piñatas is an annual showcase where artists, designers, and community groups create large-scale piñata installations that reimagine this iconic tradition. Beyond their impressive scale and artistry, these installations spark community connection, celebrate cultural heritage, and invite audiences to experience Día de los Muertos in a fresh and inspiring way.

We invite architects, designers, artists, community groups, and piñata enthusiasts to submit original ideas and concepts for traditional or reimagined abstractions of the piñata form. Installations should honor Hispanic heritage and may be expressed through traditional interpretations or bold, contemporary approaches.

Winning projects will receive a $500 award, selected by an invited jury of local community and design leaders.

Awards & Recognition

A jury of community leaders and designers will evaluate submissions. Recognition will be given for:

  • Concept strength and originality
  • Craftsmanship and execution
  • Relationship to Día de los Muertos and cultural themes
  • Commitment to sustainability in materials and approach

At the Celebration

All selected installations will be featured at the MACC’s Día de los Muertos celebrationwhere thousands of attendees will experience the work firsthand.

How to Participate

We invite artists, teams, and organizations to submit their concepts. Submissions must include:

  • Concept statement & summary
  • At least one visual (sketch, rendering, or diagram)
  • A brief explanation of materials, assembly, and installation approach

This showcase serves as a beacon of creativity, inviting the community to engage with piñata-inspired artworks and enjoy complimentary piñatas.

By providing resources, support, and opportunities for Latinx architects, designers, and allies, LiA promotes cultural awareness and sensitivity throughout the architectural field.
