PRA – Austin Studio seeking a Project Architect

PRA, a client-focused and collaborative architecture and interior design firm, has been serving clients since 1935. Originally founded in Milwaukee Wisconsin, the firm now helps clients across the nation from offices in Milwaukee and Madison Wisconsin, Sarasota Florida, Austin Texas, and Waterloo Iowa, and through strategic partnerships with other design, engineering, and construction firms in all parts of the nation.

Our architects, interior designers, and graphic artists are flexible and work in any “design style” that best reinforces the image and culture of each client. Although stylistically flexible, all PRA designers strive for enduring quality, affordability, equity, and sustainability.

Summary of Position:

The Project Architect is responsible for the production and coordination of a complete and thorough set of detailed construction documents.  The Project Architect may serve as sole designer on small projects or work in a team under the direction of a Project Manager or Senior Project Architect on a larger project. The Project Architect will provide guidance and direction to Project Specialists, Architects and Interns assigned to project teams. The Project Architect has the opportunity to take on a leadership role in the firm.

Responsibilities (others may be assigned):

COMMUNICATION

  • Provide leadership to staff assigned to project team including management of staff assignments; Oversee daily staff compliance with office standards and procedures
  • Provide mentorship to junior staff

COLLABORATION

  • Prepare project presentations and participate in and/or lead public, board, and client presentations
  • Independently, or in conjunction with Project Manager, consult with client to determine requirements of the project, develop studies or reports, and propose solutions
  • Lead project design efforts within a collaborative team structure
  • Contribute to the development of design concepts for design projects of all types and scales

PROJECT MANAGEMENT

  • Represent clients in obtaining bids and awarding construction contracts
  • Ensure project budgets, schedules, and deadlines are met and communicated to the client
  • Request consultant proposals, review scope and fees, and make recommendations for hire
  • Review coordination of consultant work into project design documents
  • Coordinate, prepare agendas, and lead project design meetings
  • Maintain communication of project status and staffing needs to team leadership
  • Attend construction meetings, observe construction status, and issue field reports

STANDARDS AND CODES

  • Oversee and direct research on products, codes, and ordinances to determine compliance and make recommendations and implement with project team
  • Lead and conduct periodic on-site observation of the work during construction to monitor conformance with the construction documents
  • Review all appropriate codes and implement on projects
  • Utilize freehand sketching, computer, and graphic resources to effectively and efficiently analyze and convey design concepts or solutions
  • Redline, review, and ensure quality of documentation at all phases of design
  • Oversee the team’s use of the PRA Working Drawing Checklist while mentoring less experienced team members
  • Review all technical work for accuracy and appropriateness and recommend changes to clients as required
  • Apply knowledge of alternative construction materials and assemblies, as well as sustainable technology to project design documents
  • Edit Specifications for issuance with the contract documents
  • Review and approve shop drawings

BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT & COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

  • Maintain relationship with the client after project completion and provide follow-up as needed
  • Participate in interview teams pursuing new work for the firm
  • Participate in continuing education seminars and professional activities to maintain current knowledge in the industry

Desired Qualifications/Knowledge:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Architecture
  • Licensed Architect. Ability to obtain licensure in the state of employment
  • Ability to Travel between the Office and Client/Job Sites. Valid Drivers License and access to insured vehicle during business hours
  • Extensive knowledge of Architectural Design
  • Eight to ten years of Architectural experience
  • Advanced Proficiency in Revit, BIM software, Photoshop
  • Understanding of Building code applications and ability to perform code studies
  • Understands land use regulatory process and can perform zoning research
  • Ability to interpret sketches, plans, specifications
  • Ability to analyze and solve drafting problems
  • Familiarity with various Building materials
  • Willingness to work in a team environment to achieve desired results
  • Willingness to coach and mentor staff
  • Knowledge of project specifications & CSI division formatting
  • Strong organizational, time management, and multitasking skills
  • Able to modify communications, both oral and written based on the intended audience: team members, clients, consultants, contractors, leadership, etc.

Physical Requirements:

Reasonable Accommodations may be made to allow individuals to complete essential job functions. May require the ability to sit for long periods of time, stand, walk and manipulate (carry, lift, move) light to medium weight of 10 to 30 pounds.  Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate technical equipment, read technical information and to analyze complex data, as well as good hearing and speaking abilities to exchange information accurately through emails, on the phone or in person.

Work Environment:

Duties and responsibilities are generally performed in an office setting. Occasional travel to offsite locations to perform work and work-related tasks or to attend meetings may be required. Work may be required outside of standard business hours as project needs may require meeting attendance or work be performed in evenings or weekends.
