The Greenbelt Overlook Residence belongs to a family of three and features a spectacular view of the Austin Barton Creek Greenbelt. The homeowners requested a home both serious and playful that referenced modern and rustic influences while hewing to neither. This puzzle, combined with a difficult site restricted by setbacks, protected trees, and utility easements, created a daunting design challenge. The house comprises public functions and a small gymnasium on the first floor, with bedrooms, a small den, and a generous roof deck above. The home is rich in detail, with a robust materiality throughout. However, the real surprise of the house is the way it negotiates its site—visitors enter from an unassuming suburban street and are welcomed by the dramatic views of the greenbelt below.
